This current study looked at 50 mobile phone users selected randomly using Short Messaging Service (SMS) as one of their daily communication tools so as to find out whether SMS vocabulary will cause drafted language damage in Malaysia. SMS language is defined as using abbreviations, recently created words and phrases, code-switching, code-mixing and emoticons in the messages.

The findings indicated that the majority of the respondents agree that SMS dialect causes written language destruction. This could be because messages are full of spoken-like punctuational, unconventional utilization of punctuation and abbreviations, and ungrammatical word in order to comply with the conditions of electronic interaction to reduce space, time and effort.
