Although Sabah and Sarawak received their independence on thirty-one August 1963, Hari Kemerdekaan is a significant date through Malaysia. On this day, Malaysians from most backgrounds, contest and religious beliefs celebrate jointly in a harmonious way.

Typically, a grand and vibrant parade can be held on the Merdeka Sq in Kuala Lumpur, where people may attend and celebrate. Different government agencies and sectors sign up for together to participate in the parade.
