Interaction technology is usually changing the way of life. Language is no exclusion. Some language researchers believe written terminology is going down hill due to the increase usage of electric communication.
This current study looked at 50 mobile phone users selected randomly using Short Messaging Service (SMS) as one of their daily communication tools so as to find out whether SMS vocabulary will cause drafted language damage in Malaysia. SMS language is defined as using abbreviations, recently created words and phrases, code-switching, code-mixing and emoticons in the messages.
The findings indicated that the majority of the respondents agree that SMS dialect causes written language destruction. This could be because messages are full of spoken-like punctuational, unconventional utilization of punctuation and abbreviations, and ungrammatical word in order to comply with the conditions of electronic interaction to reduce space, time and effort. Even though the language change due to the improvements in electric communication technology is inevitable, we have to keep in mind the bad impact on the written language has to do with the technology users not the technology by itself. The mobile phone first appeared in Malaysia more than a decade ago and was mainly used simply by professionals. It was bulky, high-priced, and constructed with basic features such as tone call. Today, mobile phones include other the best online features that allow faster communication and entertainment just like Short Communication Service (SMS), MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Part 3) player, games, net and movies. These functions attracted people from all walks of life like the younger technology, and consequently led to the increase in the number of cellphone users in Malaysia.
