The theme of Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” is the interior conflict a person feels between one’s innate meaning beliefs and one’s dedication to his or her family. This kind of theme can be extended to the institution which will encourages or perhaps demands activities of an individual that conflict having a person’s moral beliefs; for example the story could apply to someone whose workplace demands he or she do some wrong or unlawful in one’s job. Faulkner wrote this story in the third person. The narrator has limited knowledge, being aware of Sarty’s, the key characters thoughts, but not the thoughts of others. The Rural Southern region and an unspecified period of time after the Municipal War give you the settee pertaining to the story.

Faulkner made extensive use of metaphor in the story. He creates about a clock that no longer runs although has been trapped at 2: 14 for years. This is a sign that although Sarty has hopes that his daddy will change, there is absolutely no change in the family’s life and his dad will remain a similar.

They will continue to move frequently and his father will always you should find an excuse to burn barns. Sarty analyzes the size of the large pure light house the place that the de Spains live with a courthouse. This represents Sarty’s belief in justice and truth. This is certainly in sharpened contrast to both the unpainted, small house occupied simply by Sarty’s as well as the firm black coat Abner Sarty wears. The black color is the contrary of the white colored that signifies justice and truth.

The coat is usually stiff recommending that Abner resistant to modify, reinforcing the metaphor offered by the non-working clock. By having the main character, Sarty, leave his family members at the end from the story, Faulkner appears to believe obeying one’s conscience much more important than loyalty to one’s relatives, employer, region, or various other entity. Faulkner’s use of imagery and the timeless theme of “Barn Burning” provide a story that is and should always be read simply by people all over the place.
