Ethnic bias is definitely one of many biases to be found in psychological study. If you look at diverse research studies in Psychology then you definitely will see that nearly all that studies have been carried out in Traditional western society and has been put on the rest of the world not recognising that there might be distinctions.
Most United kingdom and American studies possess used samples of participants from other own nationalities, and usually students. This means that not only can the effects not be applied to other nationalities and the remaining world, but they cant be used on anyone who might not be a student. Psychology is as a result guilty of a great imposed etic, trying to describe the conduct in one area of the world, elizabeth. g. Indonesia, with ideas and analysis that has been designed in another, America. Culture destined syndromes are a clear part of psychology wherever culture tendency is present.
Culture bound syndromes are disorders which have been initial described in and closely linked to a specific area, group of people or portion of the world. Although there are many culture bound syndromes that have been located, are they really mental lack of stability. Just because the west finds that the Chinese means of greaving can be slightly strange does that mean they are affected by a mental illness? Classification systems are full of traditions bias.
If perhaps someone is having a conversation with a deceased relative within our culture, then according to the DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) that person can be mentally sick, but if it was in Africa, where conversing with dead family is considered normal behaviour, this assumption the fact that person can be mentally shaky is certainly not appropriate. While the every country is becoming more multi-culturally attitudes need to change. Traditions bias will probably always be present in Psychology as well as reasearch since no one can be both English language and Indian and China. This could lead to some people (if they are wishing to go to the extreme) considering it to become racist.
Even more cross-cultural research is needed. As then we can compare several cultures to the own, rather than generalising inappropriate reseach that doesn’t apply to all civilizations and building a wrong impression.
